About The Event
Virginia's 250th Commemoration Exhibition: "Give Me Liberty: Virginia and the Forging of a Nation" commemorates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence by focusing on Virginia’s pivotal role in the American Revolution. The exhibition, produced in partnership by the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation and the Virginia Museum of History & Culture (VMHC) is presented by Virginia's 250th Commission. It is open at the VMHC through January 2026, and will reopen July 2026 at the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown. Mr. Bakari, one of the developers of this exhibit, will speak to us about the making of this exhibit which explores the people, sites, and events in Virginia that created a new nation and will examine what concepts of liberty meant for different people in the 1770s and 1780s. Mr. Bakari’s presentation will provide a glimpse into select artifacts, paintings, and interactive media installations that bring the story of American independence to life.
Drawing on extensive research and rarely seen primary sources, this powerful new history examines why the Revolution became so violent—and how that legacy shaped the nation’s founding.
