About French’s Tavern:

Originally known as Swan’s Creek Plantation, the home has served over the centuries as an inn, tavern, and general store for travelers making their way from Richmond to the Piedmont and Shenandoah Valley. Under Thomas Jefferson’s ownership, its name changed to Indian Camp for Indian Camp Creek nearby. Jefferson sold it to settle his father-in-law’s debts. The house features period furnishings, its original Chinese lattice stair railing, and a rare movable partition wall ("swingwall"). An archaeological dig was conducted onsite for five consecutive summers by the University of Tennessee, uncovering layers of history and helping guide the authentic restoration of the property, including the recent reconstruction of its outdoor kitchen near its original location.

Renamed French’s Tavern after Hugh French purchased and operated the establishment beginning in 1807, the home today stands as a vivid testament to early American life and architecture.

Tour Highlights:

• Our visit will feature special appearances by historical interpreter young Thomas Jefferson, as well as Rebecca Suerdieck, historian and educator, who will demonstrate 18th-century cooking techniques and share historic recipes in the newly reconstructed outdoor kitchen, faithfully rebuilt near its original foundation.

• We’ll enjoy lunch from the beloved County Seat Restaurant, known for its southern charm and hospitality.
